FIRM HISTORY

Errol Barron / Michael Toups Architects was formed in 1977.  Errol and Michael were classmates at the Tulane University School of Architecture, class of 1964.  The firm has successfully completed over 100 built projects and has received over 30 awards for design excellence.

Both Errol and Michael hold advanced degrees in architecture and planning from Yale and Princeton Universities respectively and the office has maintained a 20 year commitment to architectural education through Errol’s role as Professor of Architecture at Tulane and through the partners’ lectures at schools of architecture in various universities.  Work of the firm has been published in Architecture Magazine, Architectural Record, Progressive Architecture, Japan’s Process Architecture, Architectural Digest, Corporate Design, Architecture South, and Fine Home Building, as well as various regional and local publications.  Barron / Toups receives particular notoriety for its design of religious, institutional, education, and business facilities.  The firm enjoys a reputation for flexibility and a highly cooperative style of project and design development.  In addition, the office has aggressively sought to develop methods of cost analysis and cost projection as a planning tool in their work with committees and boards.

Both Errol and Michael work directly on each project in a studio office that favors team work and a deep personal involvement of the partners and staff in each project.  The office actively seeks work which has the potential for development beyond functional accommodation and is known for its interest in and concern for design quality within conventional budget constraints.
